Under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (Lowland Raised Bog Habitat), the Government is committed to facilitate research and development into sustainable alternatives to peat and to encourage the development and marketing of peat alternatives. The aim of the Plan is for 40% of the total market requirements to be peat free by 2005 and 90% by 2010. The ADAS/Envirowise report published by Defra in 2006, showed that 66% of peat used in 2005 was used by amateur gardeners, and commercial horticulture accounting for the remainder. It has been estimated that the horticulture industry accounts for about one-third (much of it imported) of all the peat used as growing medium in this country, with the remaining two-thirds used almost entirely by amateur gardeners. read more

In fact, I've been known to make sales people gawk at me when my bill gets tallied (like when I drive an hour to the closest Whole Foods with a cooler in the back of my truck to stock up for months at a time). Most things we buy in processed form are fairly easy to make from scratch with a good, simple recipe. Spend your money on quality ingredients, and you won't need fancy sauces and artificial flavoring to make it taste good. read more

Never thought about combining indoor and outdoor plants in a big pot and using it inside until warm weather calls it out to play, but several of the latest garden magazines gave me a nudge. You’ll probably need an 18- to 20-inch container to give the plants plenty of growing room and a sunny location indoors. Other plants you might add include California beefsteak with its plum-colored leaves that have brilliant red veins, the aptly-named purple heart, lavender verbena and something else that trails, like ornamental oregano. With all the snow and ice we’ve had, you’ll find some plants bent or broken, so cut off the offending parts and you should have healthier, more compact beauties. Use slow-release fertilizer on fescue lawns but don’t dare put fertilizer on centipede and other warm-weather grasses until it’s flip-flop weather. read more

Plants also can be grown from pineapple and carrot tops, garlic, sweet potatoes and others. Choose a pot about 5 inches across, and plant the pineapple top in a potting soil mix so the soil is even with the bottom of the crown. Pineapples do best in sandy, acidic soil, so mix a couple tablespoons of rinsed coffee grounds into the potting soil. Carrot tops will sprout and grow into a delightful ferny foliage plant, but will not grow another carrot. Grow until several inches long, then pot the young plants in soil and a lovely vine will grow quite rapidly. read more

GARDENING Gardening basics never change — “good soil, good results” and “right plant, right place” — but gardening design and practices have become downright trendy. Decorative gardens with one or two — versus multiple colors — create a clean, uncluttered appearance. Think of it as a welcomed “visual rest” in an otherwise jumbled world — but don’t be afraid to experiment with nontraditional color combinations. The resurgence of edible gardens supports good nutrition, lessens grocery bills and helps the community when extra rows are planted for harvest-sharing with neighbors in need. Knowledgeable gardeners rise to the challenge of creating gardens with four-season appeal by incorporating ornamental grasses, evergreens and trees/shrubs that offer winter interest through unusual bark, texture or color. read more
